Sometimes overhauling a system isn't what will make the biggest impact, sometimes it's a matter of targeting painpoints and opporunitiy areas.
There were several ideas on the table about how to structure both the data entry and the calculation. We decided the best course of action was to rapidly iterate on some concepts before choosing a direction. After testing some different concepts with users, it was clear that while users needed something better than your average spreadsheet, they weren't able to find value in a product without some of the core elements to a data table.
OK, it was more than just "make it pop". Between me and the Product manager, we explored iteration after iteration until we had cemented the features and elements that were needed to craft an experience that allowed all the functions needed for the user but didn't lose sight of the usability and design that is important to a product.
